Family and Consumer Sciences, Mr. Prevosto's room. [Sal: school name and year]

Name: ______________________ Date: __________ Period: ______ Table number: ______

This is how our room runs. We read it together, we changed the parts we could, and we all signed it. Two sections (1 and 6) are about safety and allergies; those are not up for a vote. Everything else, we wrote together.

Print two copies per student. One signed copy stays in the room. One goes home.

1. Safety (not up for a vote)

Image: a small stove with a hand held up flat.

  • I do not touch a stove, an oven, a knife, an iron, or a sewing machine until I have passed the safety exam for it and Mr. Prevosto has said go.
  • I wash my hands before I touch food. Every time.
  • Hair back, sleeves up, no loose jewelry at a station.
  • If something spills, breaks, burns, or cuts, I tell an adult first. Then we fix it.
  • I know where the first aid kit, the fire extinguisher, the exits, and the Safety Data Sheet binder are. I do not use the extinguisher; I leave.
  • When the fire alarm goes, everything stops where it is. We leave by the exit on the map and meet at [Sal: your meeting spot].

2. Respect

Image: two speech bubbles.

  • One person talks at a time. When someone is talking, I am listening, not waiting to talk.
  • I say what I mean. "Pass me that thing" is not a sentence in this room.
  • Nobody gets laughed at for a wrong answer, a wrong guess, or a burnt pancake.
  • What someone shares about their family or their food stays at the table.

3. Roles

Image: a card with a name on it.

  • In a lab, everyone has a role card. The card is the boss, not a person.
  • I do my role's job. If my job is done, I ask the Station Manager what is next; I do not sit down.
  • Roles rotate. If I was Prep Cook last time, I can ask for Station Manager this time.
  • I do not take over someone else's job, even if I could do it faster.

4. Clean up

Image: a sponge and a checklist.

  • I clean as I go. My spill is my spill.
  • Nobody leaves a station until the station check: counters wiped, tools washed and put back, trash out, chairs in.
  • Six steps, in order, every lab: hair back, sleeves up, wash hands, sanitize surfaces, clean as you go, station check before dismissal.
  • The bell does not end a lab. The station check does.

5. Phones and devices

Image: a phone with a line through it, next to a laptop.

  • [Sal: write your school's phone policy here in one or two lines. Example: "Phones are off and in bags from bell to bell. A phone out during a lab is a safety issue, not a phone issue."]
  • Class devices are for the task on the board. ClassroomStreet, research, and the do now are tasks. Games are not.
  • No photos or video of anyone in this room without Mr. Prevosto's yes and the person's yes.

6. Food rules and allergies (not up for a vote)

Image: a plate with a crossed-out peanut.

  • The nurse's allergy list for this room says we do not bring in: [Sal: list the foods from the nurse's list, for example peanuts and tree nuts]. Not for a lab, not for a snack, not for a birthday.
  • I tell Mr. Prevosto about any food I cannot eat (allergy, religion, family rule) before the first lab, privately if I want. The lab plan will have a version I can eat.
  • We eat what we cook, at the table, after the station is clean. Food from a lab does not leave the room unless Mr. Prevosto says so.
  • I do not eat anything at a station before it is done and served. Tasting is a step in the recipe, not a snack.
  • Pre-cut and pre-cooked only where the recipe says so. Zero-knife policy unless the lesson opens the knife drawer.

7. The reset cue

Image: a light bulb, the numbers 5 4 3 2 1, and two open hands.

  • Lights blink. Mr. Prevosto counts down from five. By one, my hands are empty and my eyes are on him.
  • It works in a game, in a lab, in a fight over a survival list. Whatever is in my hands goes down, even a whisk.
  • Our class time on day 2 was ______ seconds. Our goal is 3.

8. What happens when it is broken

Image: a path with three steps.

  • First time: a quiet reminder at the table, and I fix it.
  • Second time: a conversation with Mr. Prevosto at the end of class, and a note in the FACS folder.
  • Third time, or any time it is safety or allergies: I am out of the lab for that day with a written alternative, and a call home. A safety violation in a lab is a zero for that lab's participation, not a zero for the lab.
  • Anyone can be a first-timer. Nobody is a third-timer by accident.

9. Rules we added (voted on by the class)

Directions: The class proposes one rewrite or new rule per table, votes, and the ones that pass are written here on every copy.

  1. ________________________________________________________________
  2. ________________________________________________________________
  3. ________________________________________________________________
  4. ________________________________________________________________

One norm from our team contract that this agreement does not cover: ________________________________

My table's proposed rewrite (the line, and what we would change it to):

Change "________________________________" to "________________________________" because ________________________________.

Signatures

I read this agreement. I helped write part of it. I will keep it.

Student: ______________________________ Date: __________

I will keep it too. It binds me: I will tell you the day before if anything hot or sharp is coming, the board will tell you what to do before you sit, and I will use the reset cue instead of my voice.

Teacher: ______________________________ Date: __________

Optional. A family member or guardian who has read this and would like to sign:

Family: ______________________________ Date: __________

Note for families [check with a native speaker]:

  • English: This paper explains how the Family and Consumer Sciences room runs (safety, respect, roles, clean up, phones, food and allergies, and what happens when a rule is broken). Your student helped write it and signed it. Your signature is optional. Questions: [Sal: your school email].
Sorular için: [Sal: your school email].
Dúvidas: [Sal: your school email].

Teacher key

There are no right answers on this handout. What to check before filing the class copy:

  • Both signature lines (student and teacher) are signed; the family line is optional.
  • Section 9 has the same added rules on every copy in the section (read them off the chart paper).
  • "Before you sign" has a real covered norm, a real uncovered norm, and a rewrite in the "change X to Y because" frame.
  • Section 7 has the day 2 reset time filled in.

Sections 1 and 6 are marked "not up for a vote." If a table proposes a rewrite that loosens either one, let it go to the vote, then say plainly that those two sections are fixed and why (safety and allergies are the two things that can send someone to the hospital). Students accept a fixed rule when they see which rules are open.

The six-step sanitation routine in section 4 uses the same wording as every Unit 1 lab: hair back, sleeves up, wash hands, sanitize surfaces, clean as you go, station check before dismissal. Do not change it here without changing it there.

Section 8 matches the grading plan: a safety violation in a lab is a zero for that lab's participation and a conversation, not a lecture, and the student gets a written lab alternative so no one loses lab points for being pulled out.

[Sal: fill in the four brackets before printing: school name and year, the meeting spot, the phone policy, the nurse's allergy list, and your email in the family note. The family note translations need a native speaker's check before they go home.]
