Slide outline for Lesson 4.17. Eleven slides, one day. The timing is fixed: do now 3, game 15, transition 2, test 20. That is the whole period. [Sal: if a class had a bad day on the model or the pitch, spend ten seconds on each model on the shelf before anyone sits down for the test. No names.]
Do now
- Write the scale conversion in one line
- At 1/4 inch equals 1 foot, a wall that is 3 inches on the plan is ___ feet
- At 1/2 inch equals 1 foot, 36 inches of path is ___ inches on the plan
- Two minutes
Teacher notes
Answers on the board: 12 feet, and 1.5 inches. Leave them up. The most common test mistake is the conversion done backward, and this do now is here to fix it.
Unit 4 Review and Test
- Lesson 4.17, the last day of Unit 4
- Fifteen minutes of game. Twenty minutes of test.
- The game is the test with your team. The test is the game by yourself.
- What do you know now about a room that you did not know on day 91?
Teacher notes

Design a Room Grab: the rules
- Seven categories, six cards each
- Point values: 1 for recall, 2 for apply, 3 for explain or compute
- A team picks a category and a value. I read the whole card. Then 20 seconds.
- Every team writes an answer on its board. Every correct board scores.
- The picking team picks the next card
Teacher notes
Read the whole card before the 20 seconds start. Teams that write early get it wrong and lose the points.
The seven categories
- Elements of design
- Principles of design
- Home safety
- Conservation
- Color
- Scale and the plan
- Budget and careers
Teacher notes
Image: the seven categories drawn as a game board with the point values 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3 under each.
Most classes miss category 6 (scale done backward) and category 7 (tax added wrong). Both are on the test. Watch for them.
Play, 15 minutes
- Boards up, markers ready
- One answer per team, one board
- No shouting the answer. Write it.
- Any category two teams miss twice gets a two-minute reteach before the next card, and that time comes out of the game
Teacher notes
Keep the scoreboard by category. Run it fast. Stop at minute 18 no matter where you are; the test needs its twenty minutes.
Three I will ask during the game
- Which is an element and which is a principle: color, balance, texture, rhythm?
- A 36-inch path at 1/2 inch equals 1 foot is how many squares on quarter-inch graph paper?
- A $250 subtotal at 8.625 percent tax gives what total?
Teacher notes
Answers: color and texture are elements, balance and rhythm are principles; 6 squares; tax $21.56, total $271.56. If either math one stalls the room, reteach it in two minutes now, not after the test.
Clear the decks, 2 minutes
- Boards and markers away
- Desks apart
- Test out, face down. Calculator out.
- Word bank list out if you use one
Teacher notes
Two minutes, timed. Have the tests stacked so you can hand them out in one pass.
Test rules
- 20 minutes
- Calculator on the three math items only
- The Unit 4 vocabulary list is your word bank if you use one
- Not sure? Write what you think and why. A reason earns partial credit.
- Show your work on every math item
Teacher notes
Circulate without helping. Read an item aloud to any student whose plan says so. The scenario item is read aloud once to the whole class.
The clock
- Start: 20 minutes
- At 10 minutes I will say "halfway. The scenario and the written response are at the end. Leave five minutes for them."
- At 18 minutes I will say "two minutes."
Teacher notes
Image: a large timer showing 20:00.
Keep the timer visible the whole time. The scenario uses a client you have not met, so nobody can answer it from memory of their own project.
Exit line, on the back of the test
- The item I was surest about was number ___
- The one I want to go over is number ___
Teacher notes
This goes in the last two minutes, or as soon as a student finishes. A student who needs the full twenty minutes for the items skips it, no penalty. Collect at the bell.
What comes next
- One retake after a review. The better score counts.
- Models come off the shelf tomorrow and go home with the rubric
- Unit 5 opens with fibers and care: what your clothes are made of and why it matters
Teacher notes
If a minute is left after the tests are in, ask: which model on the shelf would you change now that you have seen the whole unit's questions in one place? And: what is the one thing you would tell a family about to move into a smaller home? Otherwise those two questions open Unit 5's first do now.
