Lesson 0.2, Unit 0. One period. Twelve slides. Slides 3 to 5 are the no-room photo tour; skip them if the class walks the real room.

Slide 1

Do now

  • Yesterday's count: [Sal: the six hope card numbers]
  • On your map handout, before we walk: draw an X where you think the fire extinguisher is.
  • Do not get up.

Teacher notes

During the debrief, blink the lights without warning and count down from five. Time it. That number goes on the wall.

Slide 2

The reset cue

  • Lights.
  • Countdown: five, four, three, two, one.
  • Hands empty. Eyes here.
  • Today it took ______ seconds. By Friday: three.

Teacher notes

Image: a light bulb, the numbers 5 4 3 2 1, and two open hands.

"Whatever is in your hands goes down, even a whisk."

Slide 3

The tour, stops 1 to 4

  • 1 Hand sink: hands only. Never food, never dishes.
  • 2 Kitchen station A: one team, one role card each.
  • 3 First aid kit: tell an adult first.
  • 4 Fire extinguisher: I use it. You leave.

Teacher notes

Image: four photos of the room's stops, numbered. [Sal: take them the first week.]

One minute per stop. Students write the number, the name, and one rule word on the map. Show a role card at stop 2 for one minute: "The card is the boss, not a person."

Slide 4

The tour, stops 5 to 7

  • 5 Exits: two ways out. We meet at [Sal: your meeting spot].
  • 6 Supply closet: ask before you open.
  • 7 Sewing stations: needles are counted out and counted back in.

Teacher notes

Image: three more photos, numbered.

Slide 5

The tour, stops 8 to 10

  • 8 Safety Data Sheet binder: what is in every bottle and what to do if it spills.
  • 9 Trash and recycling: sorted. The bin is not a basketball hoop.
  • 10 Teacher desk and the turn-in tray: everything goes in the tray, not on the desk.

Teacher notes

Image: three more photos, numbered.

Slide 6

Practice the cue

  • Hands on pencils. Lights. Countdown. Time: ______
  • Hands on the envelopes. Lights. Countdown. Time: ______

Teacher notes

Two practices, both timed. Then the role card on the document camera: Station Manager. "What does the Station Manager do before dismissal?" The station check.

Slide 7

Draw/See/Hear, the rules

  • Pairs across the table. One describer, one drawer.
  • The describer takes a card from the envelope and holds it so the drawer cannot see.
  • Words only. No hand motions. No peeking. Sit on your hands if you have to.
  • The drawer draws on the back of the map and may ask questions.
  • Two minutes.

Teacher notes

Round 1. Start the timer. Then compare: card next to drawing, circle the differences.

Slide 8

Compare, round 1

  • Put the card next to the drawing.
  • Circle the differences. Do not argue about whose fault it was.
  • On the handout: two things the drawing got wrong, and the word that was missing.
  • "I said a window but not which corner."

Teacher notes

The frame puts the blame on the word, not the person. Say that out loud.

Slide 9

Precise words

  • Position: top, bottom, left, right, middle, corner, above, under, next to, inside, outside.
  • Size: big, small, tall, short, as big as, half the size of.
  • Count: one, two, three.
  • Shape: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, line, curve.

Teacher notes

Image: a small icon next to each position word (an arrow up, an arrow to a corner, a box inside a box).

Round 2 uses at least three of these. Swap roles, new card.

Slide 10

Round 2

  • Swap roles. New card.
  • The describer uses at least three precise words from the last slide.
  • Two minutes. Then compare again.
  • Did the second drawing come out closer? Which words did it?
Slide 11

Exit card

  • One zone and its rule.
  • The reset cue in three words.
  • One precise word I will use next time I explain something.
  • Three people read line three aloud.

Teacher notes

Collect the maps to check for eight labels; hand them back tomorrow for the FACS folder.

Slide 12

Tomorrow

  • Tomorrow your plane goes down in the north woods.
  • Ten things survived the crash. You decide what matters.
  • Alone first. Then with your table. Then we see who decided better.
