Page 4. Day 2: the three buyer cards

Your station gets one card. Read it out loud. Underline the three limits: money, time, and size.

Buyer Card 1: Ana, one sweatshirt to last two winters

Ana is in seventh grade. She walks to school, about fifteen minutes each way. She wants one sweatshirt she can wear four or five days a week from October through March, for two years. She washes it about once a week.

  • Money: she has $50 saved [update] and she would rather not spend all of it.
  • Time: no deadline, but she wants it before the weather turns.
  • Size: adult M. She has stopped growing quickly.
  • Other: nobody in her house can drive to a store to make a return, and she does not want to pay return shipping.
  • What she cares about most: that it still looks and feels good in the second winter.

Buyer Card 2: The Okonkwo family, buying for three kids

Three kids, ages 7, 10, and 13. All three need a sweatshirt. The cold week starts next Monday.

  • Money: $60 total for all three [update].
  • Time: they need all three by Monday, which is five days from today.
  • Sizes: Youth M (age 7), Youth L (age 10), adult S (age 13).
  • Other: the 7-year-old will grow out of anything within about a year. The 13-year-old cares what it looks like. Whoever shops has a car and can return things in person.
  • What they care about most: three sweatshirts, on three kids, by Monday, without going over $60.

Buyer Card 3: Dev, a specific look for one event

Dev is in eighth grade and is performing in the school talent show in three weeks. He wants the printed cropped style in this season's color, the one everybody is wearing right now, for the show. He will probably wear it a few more times after.

  • Money: $30 [update].
  • Time: three weeks, but he wants to try it on and be sure at least a few days before.
  • Size: S.
  • Other: the look matters more to him than the fabric weight. He knows it will not last for years and he is fine with that.
  • What he cares about most: that it is the right style and color, and that it arrives in time to be sure.

Teacher key

Page 1, the four kinds of places

Accept any reasonable advantage and risk. The intended set:

Kind of placeAdvantageRisk
Discount storeLowest tag price, available today, easy free returnsThinner fabric, fewer stitches per inch, single-needle seams, narrow size range
Mall brandBetter construction, wider size range, free returns, you can try it onYou pay for the brand and the store, so the same quality costs more
Secondhand shopBest quality for the price, keeps a garment in use, you can inspect it in your handsOne size only, sold as-is, no returns, may have a flaw or hidden wear
Online marketplaceWidest choice, often the lowest listed priceYou cannot touch it, shipping and returns cost money, sizing is a guess, you wait

Page 2, the four quality checks

Good results: (1) no gap, no thread showing, the seam does not open; (2) heavier is generally more durable, and for a sweatshirt about 9 oz or more is heavy; (3) 10 to 12 stitches per inch is good, 8 or fewer is low; (4) a good label gives fiber content percentages, care instructions, and a country, and there is a brand label.

Landed cost: whatever the packing slip says. The teaching point is that the listed price is never the number.

Page 3, the screen

The eight items against the three buyers. Accept any correct screen with the limit named.

#Card 1 (Ana, M, $50, two winters)Card 2 (family, $60 total, Monday, three sizes)Card 3 (Dev, S, $30, three weeks, the look)
A $12.99Possible, but 7.5 oz and 8 stitches per inch will not survive two winters of weekly washingPossible for the 13-year-old (adult S)Wrong style
B $19.99 for twoWrong size (youth only)Strong: covers the two youngest for $19.99Wrong size and style
C $44.95Strong: 9 oz, double-needle, 11 per inch, under $50Too expensive for threeOver budget and wrong style
D $69.00Over budgetOver budgetOver budget
E $6.50Wrong size (L, not M)Only one item, size L, no returnsWrong size and style
F $8.00Strong: size M, 100% cotton, 11 oz, 11 per inch, $8.00, no returns needed because she can try it onOnly one item, size M, nobody's sizeWrong style
G $9.99 plus $6.99Fails: she cannot pay return shipping and reviews say it runs smallFails the Monday deadline (12 to 20 days)Fails: wrong style, and delivery is too uncertain
H $24.99 plus $4.99Wrong for two winters (8 oz, single-needle, print may crack)Over budget for three and fails the deadline for all threeStrong: correct style, $29.98 total is under $30, arrives in 5 to 8 days with time to spare

Best answers, with the reasoning that earns full credit:

  • Card 1: item F ($8.00, 100% cotton, about 11 oz, 11 stitches per inch, size M, no returns needed because she can try it on in the shop) is the best value, and item C ($44.95) is the best answer for a buyer who wants a guarantee and a return policy. Both are defensible. A station that recommends A or H has not handled "two winters."
  • Card 2: item B for the two youngest ($19.99) plus item A for the 13-year-old ($12.99) totals $32.98 before tax, well under $60, all available today. Accept C for the 13-year-old only if the total stays under $60 (it does: $19.99 plus $44.95 = $64.94, which does not, so this is a good place to make them do the math). Any online item fails the Monday deadline.
  • Card 3: item H ($24.99 plus $4.99 shipping = $29.98) is the only item that is the right style, and it arrives in time. The defense has to handle the cracking print and the 14-day return window.

The hard question for any station recommending G or H: "Your buyer needs it Monday. Your item ships in 12 to 20 days. Answer that."

Scored complete, partial, or missing for daily work. A complete poster names the buyer, one item, a total, two quality reasons, one hidden cost, and a runner-up with a reason, and is signed by everyone at the station.
