The family

The Delacroix-Nwosu home. Three people live here: the mother, who works days; her daughter, age 2; and the mother's mother, age 74, who uses a cane and sleeps upstairs. There is one cat.

The floor plan (described)

Draw it if it helps. The house has two floors and an attached garage.

First floor, from the front door: You enter into a hallway. The stairs to the second floor go up on your left. Straight ahead is the living room. Behind the living room, through an open doorway, is the kitchen. Off the kitchen, one door leads to the attached garage, and another door leads to the back yard. There is a half bathroom (toilet and sink) under the stairs.

Second floor, at the top of the stairs: A landing. The grandmother's bedroom is on the left, with one window over the front yard. The mother's bedroom is on the right, with one window over the back yard. The toddler's room is at the end of the hall, with one window over the side yard. The full bathroom is between the mother's room and the toddler's room.

The home, room by room (fifteen hazards are hidden in these sentences)

Front hall and stairs. The front door has a lock and a chain. A basket of shoes sits on the bottom two steps of the stairs. There is no railing on the stairs; it was removed when the wall was painted and never put back. The hall light bulb burned out last week. A small rug at the top of the stairs has a curled-up corner.

Living room. A couch faces a TV on a stand. The TV cord and a lamp cord run under the area rug to reach the outlet. A power strip on the floor has six plugs in it: the TV, a lamp, a game console, a phone charger, a space heater, and a fan. A candle sits on the low coffee table, and the toddler's toys are on the floor next to it. The window has a blind with a long looped cord that hangs to the floor.

Kitchen. The stove is against the back wall. A pot of water is on the front burner with the handle turned out toward the room. A dish towel hangs over the oven door handle, touching the front of the stove. Under the sink, the cabinet has no lock, and inside are dish soap, drain cleaner, and bleach. The grandmother's pill bottles are lined up on the counter next to the coffee maker where she can reach them. A step stool with a cracked leg is by the refrigerator. The kitchen has a smoke detector, and it works.

Half bathroom. Clean. A night light is plugged in. Nothing else.

Garage. The mother warms up the car in the garage on cold mornings with the garage door closed. A can of gasoline for the lawn mower sits on the floor next to the water heater. There is a CO detector in the garage. There is no CO detector anywhere inside the house.

Back yard. A ladder is leaning against the house from when the gutters were cleaned. The back steps have ice on them in winter. There is a small above-ground pool with a ladder that stays in place and no fence or gate.

Second floor landing and hall. A smoke detector is on the ceiling. It chirps once a minute; the battery is low. The hall is carpeted.

Grandmother's bedroom. The bed is high. A space heater is on the floor about a foot from the blanket that hangs off the bed. There is no lamp within reach of the bed, so she walks across the room in the dark to the wall switch. The window opens.

Mother's bedroom. A laundry basket is by the door. The window opens. A phone charger is on the nightstand. Nothing else.

Toddler's room. A crib. A dresser with the drawers not anchored to the wall; the toddler has started climbing. A bottle of children's medicine is on the dresser. A window with a screen and no window guard; the crib is under the window. There is no smoke detector in this room.

Full bathroom. A bath mat with no rubber back on the tile floor. A hair dryer is plugged in next to the sink, cord in the sink. There is no grab bar in the tub. The medicine cabinet has a latch.

Part 1 (accept any hazards from the slides): Kitchen: pot handles out, grease, knives in the sink, towel by the burner; rule: handles in, nothing on the stove, smoke detector nearby but not over the stove. Bathroom: wet floor, no grab bar, medicines in reach, hair dryer near water; rubber-backed mat, grab bar, latched cabinet, GFCI outlet. Stairs: clutter, loose rug, no rail, dark; clear steps, secure rugs, a rail, a light. Bedroom: space heater by the bed, cords under rugs, candles, a blocked window; three feet from anything that burns, cords in the open, no candles, window opens. Garage: gasoline near the water heater, running car, tools in reach; fuel outside or in a cabinet away from flame, never run a car in a closed garage, tools up. Outside: a ladder left up, an unfenced pool, ice; ladder down and stored, fence and gate, salt and clear. Smoke detectors: every level and every sleeping area; test monthly; replace at 10 years. Part 2, the fifteen planted hazards:

Extra hazards students may also list (accept all with a fix): the pool with no fence and the ladder left in (drowning); the ladder leaning on the house (fall); ice on the back steps (fall); the chirping smoke detector (fire; change the battery); the space heater a foot from the blanket (fire; three feet); the grandmother walking in the dark (fall; a lamp by the bed); the unanchored dresser (fall; anchor straps); children's medicine on the dresser (poison); the crib under an unguarded window (fall; move the crib, add a guard); no smoke detector in the toddler's room (fire); the bath mat with no rubber back (fall); the hair dryer with the cord in the sink (electrical); no grab bar (fall). The description holds more than fifteen so that no team runs out; count any correct hazard toward the fifteen.

Most dangerous for the toddler: accept the drain cleaner, the pills, the blind cord, the pool, or the crib under the window with a reason. Most dangerous for the grandmother: accept the missing railing, the rug at the top, walking in the dark, the space heater, or the tub with no grab bar with a reason.

Grade 8 stretch: free fixes include moving the shoe basket, turning the handle in, moving the towel, removing the rug, moving the pills up, taking the ladder down and the pool ladder out, changing how the car is warmed up, moving the gasoline. Money fixes: railing $60 plus, CO detector $25, smoke detector for the toddler's room $15, window guard $30, cabinet locks $8, anchor straps $10, cordless blinds $35, grab bar $20, bath mat $12, pool fence $400 and up. About $215 without the pool fence.

Part 3: Every bedroom: the door to the hall and the window. Toddler: carried by the mother. Grandmother: needs someone to help her on the stairs, or a plan to get her out the window if the stairs are blocked (a fire escape ladder, about $40, or waiting at the window for firefighters with the door closed). Meeting spot: the mailbox at the end of the front walk, or a neighbor's front step; not the driveway, and not far enough that the grandmother cannot walk to it.
