Teacher note
Reviews Lesson 4.9. Reviews Lesson 4.9: the five pattern words, visual versus actual texture, pattern scale, and the six works-or-fights combinations from the Mood Board Planner. Use it as the two-minute review at the start of Lesson 4.10 Day 2 before the Design Vocabulary Check, which carries texture, pattern, and the layering rule. About three minutes. The end panel prints the three-part layering rule.

Pattern Patrol
A swatch picture appears. Tap its bin: stripe, plaid, floral, geometric, or solid. Then a combination or a surface appears, and you tap works or fights, or actual or visual.

The ones to study:
Worth knowing by heart:
- The layering rule, three parts: (1) vary the scale, so no two patterns are the same size; (2) repeat one color through every piece; (3) let one pattern lead and keep the others quiet.
- Texture is how a surface feels, or how it looks like it would feel. Actual texture is what your hand finds. Visual texture is what your eye is told by a flat surface.
- A room with three colors and no texture feels flat, plain, cold, or unfinished.
