# Slides 7.5: Mock Interviews With Peer Feedback

Slide outline for Lesson 7.5. Eleven slides, one day. Slides 4, 5, and 6 stay up for the whole interview block, because a triad that forgets the rotation or the rules cannot ask the teacher while the teacher is walking ten other triads.

## Slide 1: Mock Interviews

- Unit 7, Lesson 7.5, Topic 7.1 Present Yourself
- Today: three rounds. You will be the interviewer, the candidate, and the observer
- The last 15 minutes: your resume and your interview get scored
Image: two chairs facing each other with a third chair set to the side.
Notes: Room in triads before the bell. Letters assigned as students walk in, so triads are not friend groups. Lesson 7.4 handouts and the Lesson 7.2 resume drafts back at the door.

## Slide 2: Do now

- You walk into the room. The person hiring you has not said a word yet
- Name three things they have already noticed about you
Notes: Take five answers. Expect clothes, whether you looked up, whether you were on your phone, whether you said hello, how you sat.

## Slide 3: The first twenty seconds

- Walk in. Look up
- Offer your hand
- "Good morning, I am ___"
- Sit when you are invited. Both feet on the floor
- At the end: "Thank you for your time"
Notes: Do it once badly (eyes down, hands in pockets, mumbled name) and once well. Then every student practices the handshake and the name with the person next to them, on a count of three. Forty seconds, and it is the most portable thing in this unit.

## Slide 4: Three roles

- **Interviewer.** Holds the cards. Asks. Does not coach. Does not laugh
- **Candidate.** Answers. Does not read from the paper
- **Observer.** Says nothing until the end. Fills the feedback sheet WHILE it is happening
Notes: Say the interviewer rule twice and stop the first coaching you hear in one sentence: "Interviewers do not help. That is the whole point."

## Slide 5: The rotation

| Round | Interviewer | Candidate | Observer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A | B | C |
| 2 | B | C | A |
| 3 | C | A | B |

Notes: Leave this up. Announce the rotation out loud at every change anyway.

## Slide 6: The six questions. You are seeing them now, not in the chair.

1. Tell me about yourself
2. Why do you want to work here?
3. What are you good at?
4. Tell me about a time when something went wrong and you had to figure it out
5. How do you work with people you do not agree with?
6. Do you have any questions for me?
- **Then the interviewer draws a seventh card. Nobody sees it first.**
Notes: Read all six aloud. Question 1 is the three-part answer. Question 4 is the STAR story. Question 6: "no" is a weak answer, and the interviewer waits three full seconds before moving on.

## Slide 7: The timing

- 4 minutes of interview
- 1 minute: the observer reads the two feedback lines aloud
- 30 seconds to swap
Notes: Set the timer and honor it. If a triad finishes early the interviewer draws a second random card. Do not let them sit.

## Slide 8: The feedback sheet

- The five opening and closing checks
- The four traits from Lesson 7.3, scored 1 to 4, with what you actually saw or heard
- The two content items: three parts present? STAR Result present?
- **Two written lines: one thing to keep, one thing to change. Both name something you SAW or HEARD**
Notes: "Good job" does not count and say so now. The question that fixes a vague line: "What did you hear that made you write that?"

## Slide 9: Last 15 minutes. This is the check.

- `Rubric 07` criterion 1: the resume
- `Rubric 07` criterion 2: the interview
- You fill the self-assessment row FIRST, with one sentence of evidence each
- Then staple four things and hand them in: resume, three-part answer, STAR planner, feedback sheet
Notes: Read criteria 1 and 2 aloud with all four levels. Nothing about this should be a surprise while a student is sitting in the chair, which is why the rubric is in their hands.

## Slide 10: One more line to write

- On your feedback sheet:
- A trait your PEER saw that you did not name about yourself on your Lesson 7.3 sheet
- One sentence on the difference
Notes: Two volunteers read theirs. Then: "The person across the table sees things you cannot. That is why you practice with people instead of a mirror."

## Slide 11: Half this rubric is not scored yet

- Criteria 1 and 2: done today
- Criteria 3, 4, 5, 6: the project that starts tomorrow
- Tomorrow you stop being the person applying and start being the person deciding
Notes: Say it plainly so students do not think the rubric is broken. Criteria 1 and 2 come back at the start of Lesson 7.7.
