# Teacher key

**Part 1 answers (use current figures the week you teach it):**

Overall: about a third of the food produced in this country is never eaten, and the per-person figure most commonly cited is roughly 200 to 300 pounds a year of food thrown away. [Sal: pull the current USDA or EPA figure the week you teach it. Students will look it up on their phones, and it is better if your number matches theirs.]

**Part 3, sample data answers:** 60 grams per person for 2 days; 30 grams per person per day; 5,400 grams per person per school year; about 12 pounds per person per school year; about 7,200 pounds, or about 3.6 tons, for a 600 student school.

**The two errors to watch for:**
1. Multiplying by 180 before dividing by the number of days. The redirect is one question: "is 60 grams one day or two?"
2. Losing the unit. Ask "grams or ounces?" at every table. A number without a unit is not an answer.

**Part 4, what a real change looks like:**
- "The Station Manager puts unopened leftovers in the labeled bin at the end of every lab, and the next class gets first call on them."
- "Toppings Chief measures cheese into a cup instead of pouring from the bag, starting with the next lab."
- "Whoever sets the trash bin puts the compost bin next to it, so peels do not go in the trash by default."
- "At lunch, anyone who does not want their unopened milk puts it on the share table instead of the tray."

Not a change: "everybody should be less wasteful," "the cafeteria should make better food," "recycle more."

**Grade 8 stretch, sample:** at $2.00 a pound, 12 pounds per person is about $24 a year per student, and 7,200 pounds is about $14,400 for a 600 student school. That number is the one that lands.

**Scoring:** the data sheet is daily work, scored complete, partial, or missing. The two things to look for: correct units on all three calculations, and three changes that each name a who, a what, and a when.

**One handling note:** the class number is a class number. Do not report per-station or per-student waste in a way that identifies who wasted what. If one lab's scraps are much larger, say it as a recipe problem, not a behavior problem.
