# Slides 3.19: Careers in Human Services and Education, and the Unit 3 Test

Slide outline for Lesson 3.19, one day. Ten slides. The test runs in the last 20 minutes and gets all of them; if the walk runs long, stop it at eight minutes. Slides 3 to 7 carry the walk. Slides 9 and 10 are the test directions and the test itself. Post the eight career cards around the room before the bell and have the tests face down at the seats before the walk ends.

## Slide 1: Careers in Human Services and Education

- Lesson 3.19: Families and Caring for Others
- Unit 3: Growing Up, Getting Along
- Do now: name one job where a person uses something we did in this unit
- Listening, handling a conflict, helping a family, keeping a child safe. Write the job and the skill
Notes: Four minutes. Take four answers. A class that can only name "teacher" needs the full walk.

## Slide 2: Eight of those jobs are on the walls

- Twelve minutes to meet all eight
- Then you decide which one you would take
- Then the test, the last 20 minutes, and it gets all 20
Image: eight posted cards drawn small around the edge of the slide, with a walking path between them.
Notes: Say the test timing now so nobody is surprised at minute 20.

## Slide 3: The eight careers and their clusters

- Teacher, and school counselor: Education and Training
- Pediatric nurse, and speech therapist: Health Science
- Social worker, and child care director: Human Services
- Coach: Education and Training, and Hospitality and Tourism for recreation
- Family lawyer: Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security
Notes: These are the same 16 clusters from Lesson 2.21. Ask who had Human Services or Education and Training in their top three back then.

## Slide 4: How the walk works

- At each card, read all three lines: what the person does, what it needs, what it uses from this unit
- Read the whole card. Not the picture
- Then rate the three questions on your walk sheet
- Groups of three or four. Rotate on the reset cue, every 90 seconds
Image: a career card drawn with its three labeled lines: does, needs, uses.
Notes: Do not re-explain the reset cue. Grade 6 visits six cards. Grade 8 adds the four stretch cards: pediatrician, occupational therapist, family mediator, youth program director.

## Slide 5: The three questions, rated 1 to 3

- Q1: would I like the daily work?
- Q2: could I do the training?
- Q3: do I have, or want, the skill this unit gave it?
- 1 no, 2 maybe, 3 yes. Total out of 9
- Rate all three at every card. A blank is not a rating
Image: three small face icons, frowning, flat, and smiling, numbered 1, 2, 3.
Notes: Clipboard: reads the whole card before rating, rates all three questions, pathway line names the training from the card. A student who rates everything 3 gets the question "which one would you not want to do at 7 a.m. on a Monday?"

## Slide 6: At the end of the walk

- Total each career. Circle your top one
- Write the pathway line: what it takes to get there, from the card
- Write one skill from this unit it uses, and where you practiced it
- Grade 8: one thing you could do this year to start toward it
Notes: The pathway line has to match the card's "needs" line, not a guess. Twelve minutes for the whole walk including totals.

## Slide 7: Which one got the most circles?

- Hand vote, by card number
- Two students: why yours, and which unit skill it uses
- The pathway line for the top two, out loud
- The babysitting course from yesterday is the first real step into three of these eight
Notes: Two minutes, no more. [Sal: the counselor, the nurse, and the social worker are three of the eight; ask whether any of them will stand at their own card for two minutes.]

## Slide 8: Questions

- What does a speech therapist do in a day? What training does the card say?
- Which of the eight uses the I-message the most?
- Which two need a license, and what is a license?
- A career scored 9 on your sheet but the training is six years. Does the training change your answer?
- If none of the eight is for you, which unit skill do you still want to keep, and where else would it be used?
Notes: Take one or two only. The test needs its full 20 minutes.

## Slide 9: Unit 3 Test directions

- Twenty items, 50 points. 20 minutes on the timer
- Part 1 is the lifespan. Part 2 is self-concept, peers, and stress. Part 3 is communication, conflict, and relationships. Part 4 is families and caring for others
- Item 19 is a scenario. Item 20 is a short written response, three to five sentences
- Answer every item. If you are not sure, write what you think and why
- No item asks about your own family or your own friends. Use the examples from class
Image: a plain timer showing 20:00.
Notes: Hand the tests out face down and read these directions before anyone turns one over. Start the timer as they turn them over. A word bank is on the matching items; a bilingual glossary is allowed; the test can be read aloud.

## Slide 10: While you test, and after

- Pencils only. Nothing on the desk but the test and the walk sheet
- Turn in the test and the walk sheet together
- Extended time continues at the start of tomorrow or in a resource period, per your plan
- Tomorrow: Unit 4, and the first five minutes are two items: the class's top career, and the test item most of you missed
Notes: Collect at the bell. Do not shorten the test for any reason. Write the class's most-circled career and its pathway line on the board tomorrow.
