# Slides 3.1: Stages From Infant to Older Adult

Slide outline for Lesson 3.1. Eleven slides. Slide 1 is the ClassroomStreet Round 2 close and belongs to Unit 2; it runs for 10 minutes before the lesson starts. Sal fills in the standings before class.

## Slide 1: ClassroomStreet Round 2: final standings

- Standings by merchant number [Sal: paste the leaderboard, no names]
- Three lines from Entry 10, "a sentence to my future self," read aloud (chosen with permission, no names)
- Unit 2 was about you. Unit 3 is about everybody, at every age
- Investor Journals go in the folder now
Notes: Ten minutes and not one more. Read the three lines slowly. Then flip to slide 2 and start Unit 3.

## Slide 2: Do now

- List every stage of a person's life you can think of, from birth to the end
- One word each
- How many did you get?
Notes: Take the shortest list and the longest. Write the longest on the board. There are seven; most lists have four or five.

## Slide 3: Seven stages

- Infancy: birth to about 1 (a crib)
- Early childhood: about 1 to 5 (a tricycle)
- Middle childhood: about 6 to 11 (a backpack)
- Adolescence: about 12 to 18 (a phone)
Image: the four stage headers with the picture cue next to each, laid out left to right on a timeline.
Notes: Put the physical headers on the board as you say each one. Say "about" every time.

## Slide 4: Seven stages, continued

- Young adulthood: about 19 to 39 (a work badge)
- Middle adulthood: about 40 to 64 (a house key)
- Older adulthood: 65 and up (a cane)
- The ranges are approximate. People are not on a schedule
Image: the last three headers finishing the timeline.
Notes: Students copy all seven onto the sort sheet, Part 1.

## Slide 5: Four things change at every stage

- Physical: the body (an arm)
- Emotional: the feelings (a heart)
- Social: the people (two figures)
- Intellectual: the thinking (a lightbulb)
Notes: These four letters, P, E, S, I, go on every card in the sort. Students write them at the top of the sort sheet.

## Slide 6: One stage, four changes: adolescence

- Physical: growth spurts, sleep clock shifts later
- Emotional: feelings get bigger and faster
- Social: friends matter more; family still matters
- Intellectual: the planning part of the brain is still building
Notes: This is the model. Lesson 3.3 spends a whole period here. Keep it to one minute.

## Slide 7: The timeline sort

- One set of 21 cards per team
- Read the card. Decide the stage. Put it under the header on your table
- Write the card number and the aspect letter (P, E, S, I) on your sort sheet
- Argue about the close calls. That is the point
- 10 minutes
Image: a timer graphic and a photo described in words: three cards laid under a "Middle childhood" header on a table.
Notes: Circulate with the clipboard. Do not tell a team whether a card is right.

## Slide 8: Close calls

- Card 8: the bike with no training wheels
- Card 15: the first job
- Card 13: the keys, the mail, and the photo on the fridge
- Same age is not the same stage
Notes: Ask one team to bring its three hardest cards to the board timeline. Let the room vote. Then say why each one is a range.

## Slide 9: What each stage needs

- A baby needs: ___ from the people around it
- An older adult needs: ___
- Build the list together, stage by stage
- Then: pick two stages, write the need, and one sentence on which is harder to meet
Image: the seven headers again with a blank line under each for the board list.
Notes: Board list to aim for: safety and feeding; play and words; school and friends; independence and limits; work and partners; caring for others; care and respect. Any reasonable answer counts.

## Slide 10: Exit card

- 3 stages in order with an age range
- 2 things that change in adolescence (one physical, one that is not)
- 1 stage you want to know more about
Notes: Three students read their "1." Sort the cards before the next period.

## Slide 11: Tomorrow

- Ages and stages of young children
- An egg, a napkin, and a question: does it still exist?
- Keep your sort sheet
Notes: The card sets get used again in Lesson 3.4's review game. Collect and clip them.
