# Slides 2.5: Goals and the Five-Step Decision Model

Slide outline for Lesson 2.5, two days. Day 1 is slides 1 to 10 (the goal ladder). Day 2 is slides 11 to 20 (the decision grid and the Goal Plan). Slide 12 is the five-step model; print it as a page if the Unit 0 poster is not on the wall.

# Day 1

## Slide 1: Goals and the Five-Step Decision Model

- Lesson 2.5, Day 1: the goal ladder
- Unit 2: Me, My Goals, My Money
- You need: your SMART Goal Builder from yesterday and your Lesson 2.1 sort sheet
Image: a simple drawn ladder with five rungs, the top rung labeled "goal" and the bottom rung labeled "this week."
Notes: Pull the "needs more" pile from Lesson 2.4. Those students fix their goal during slide 4.

## Slide 2: Do now

- Write one thing you want that will take more than a year to get
- Write one thing you want that you could have by Friday
- Two lines, two minutes
Notes: Cold call four. Label the columns long-term and short-term. Hook: nobody gets the long-term one without a lot of short-term ones stacked up. Today you stack them.

## Slide 3: Short-term, long-term

- Short-term goal: done in days or weeks
- Long-term goal: takes months or years
- A SMART goal can be either
- A long-term goal without short-term goals under it is a wish with a date on it
Notes: Students copy the two definitions onto page 1.

## Slide 4: The goal ladder

- Top rung: the goal
- Every rung below: one step, in order
- Bottom rung: something you do this week, with a day on it
- Every rung is an action someone could watch you do
Image: the ladder from slide 1 filled in: top "make the school team in March"; rungs from the top: learn the two plays (January); run a mile three times a week (Monday); go to every open gym (November to February); ask the coach when open gym is (Tuesday).
Notes: Build it on the board rung by rung. While you model, "needs more" students fix their SMART goal with a partner using the five-letter frame.

## Slide 5: The rung test

- Could someone watch you do it?
- "Ask the coach when open gym is": yes
- "Get more serious": no
- "Run one mile three times a week": yes
- "Get better at defense": no
Notes: Say the test once and then use it every time you circulate.

## Slide 6: Build yours

- Pick one of your two SMART goals from yesterday
- Top rung: the goal
- Three to five steps in order
- Bottom rung dated within one week
- 12 minutes
Notes: Grade 6: three rungs. Grade 8: a second ladder for the other goal on the back.

## Slide 7: The rung that breaks

- Every ladder has one
- What is the most likely thing to stop you? Name it
- What will you do when it happens?
- Obstacle: I forget. Plan: a note on the fridge
- Obstacle: no ride to open gym. Plan: sign up for the late bus
Notes: Push for a specific plan, not "try harder."

## Slide 8: Who helps

- A person with a name and a way to reach them
- "My sister, who reminds me at dinner"
- "The coach, who runs the late bus list; I see him in the gym at 2:30"
- Not "my family." Who, and how?
Notes: Grade 6 may skip the helper line, but encourage it.

## Slide 9: Partner turn

- Read your ladder to your partner
- Partner says one rung that is not an action, or "all actions"
- Fix it if you need to
Notes: Two minutes each way.

## Slide 10: Exit line and tomorrow

- My first step is ___ and I will do it on ___ (day). The person who helps is ___
- Thumbs: is your first rung dated within a week?
- Keep page 1 in your folder. Tomorrow: a real decision, and the Goal Plan goes in
Notes: Two students read theirs. Page 1 stays in the FACS folder.

# Day 2

## Slide 11: Goals and the Five-Step Decision Model

- Lesson 2.5, Day 2: a real choice, and the Goal Plan
- This is the Topic 2.2 check
- You need: page 1 from yesterday, your Lesson 2.1 sort sheet, pages 2 and 3
Image: a decision grid table, blank, with three option columns and three rows.
Notes: Timer up. The last 10 minutes are the check.

## Slide 12: Do now, and the five steps

- Write the five steps of the decision model from Unit 0, in order, without looking at the wall
- Then check:
- 1. Name the choice. 2. List options. 3. Weigh each against what matters. 4. Decide. 5. Look back
Image: five small icons in a row: a question mark, a list, a balance scale, a check mark, a mirror.
Notes: Count who got all five. Expect three of five. Hook: today you use all five on a choice you are actually facing.

## Slide 13: The decision grid

- Options across the top, at least three
- What matters down the side: your top three values, or the goal on your ladder
- A plus or a minus in every box, with one word why
- Then decide, defend it in two sentences, and set a look-back date
Notes: Walk Card 1 (the $25 birthday money) through the grid on the board. Options: game today, save all of it, save $15 and spend $10. Rows: bike by June, fun, independence. Decide C. Look back June 1.

## Slide 14: Your choice

- Your own real choice is best
- Or take one of the six cards on page 2
- Card 1: the $25. Card 2: same day. Card 3: tonight. Card 4: tryouts. Card 5: reading time. Card 6: lunch money
- The rows must come from your own values or your own goal
- 14 minutes
Notes: About a third will take a card. That is fine. The check is three options and every cell filled.

## Slide 15: Filled in backwards

- If the grid agrees with you on every row, you filled it in backwards
- Find one honest minus for the option you want
- "Fun: minus, nothing tonight" is honest
Notes: The most common fix you will make while circulating.

## Slide 16: Look back

- The step everybody skips
- On what date will you check?
- How will you know? A number helps: "on June 1, do I have $120?"
- I will hand this back in four weeks and you will write one line on the cover
Notes: [Sal: put the four-week date in your own calendar now.]

## Slide 17: The Goal Plan

- Page 1: your SMART goal and ladder
- Page 2: your decision grid
- Page 3: the cover (three lines) and the rubric
- Score yourself first in the "Me" column. I score after class
- Staple, turn in. 10 minutes
Notes: Circulate with the rubric and give each student one sentence before they turn in.

## Slide 18: How I score it

- SMART: all five parts on the top rung
- Ladder: three to five action rungs in order, first rung dated within a week, an obstacle with a plan, a helper
- Decision grid: three options, rows from your own sheets, every cell filled, a defended decision, a look-back date
- 12 points. Meets on all three is 9
Notes: Read the self-scores. A self-score two or more points above yours is a conference, not a mark-down.

## Slide 19: Exit card

- The step of the decision model I will most likely skip in real life is ___ because ___
- One line on an index card
Notes: Three students read theirs. Not scored. Most say "look back." Use that tomorrow.

## Slide 20: Tomorrow

- Where do your 24 hours go?
- Your first rung gets a real hour on a real day
- Optional: do the first rung before tomorrow and be ready to say so
Notes: One line. Keep the Goal Plans after scoring; Lesson 2.6 needs the first rung.
