# Slides 01.22: Careers in Nutrition and Culinary Arts, and the Unit 1 Test

Lesson 1.22, one day, 9 slides. The test slides stay up for the last twenty minutes.

## Slide 1: Do now
- Name one person you know who works with food for a living.
- What is their job called?
Notes: Five quick answers on the board.

## Slide 2: Every job you named is on a card
- So are five you have never heard of.
- One of them pays more than a lot of doctors' offices.
- You can start it in this kitchen.

## Slide 3: The food career ladder
- Dishwasher, prep cook, line cook: no degree. Start from the bottom, climb by showing up and learning.
- Baker, restaurant manager, caterer: a certificate, an apprenticeship, or a two-year degree.
- School food service director, health inspector, food scientist, registered dietitian: a four-year degree or more.
- Pay ranges on the cards are marked [update].

## Slide 4: The card sort
- Pairs. Ten cards. Ten minutes.
- Sort 1: by education needed. Name one job per group.
- Sort 2: mostly food, mostly people, or mostly data?
- Sort 3: by pay, lowest to highest. Circle the surprise.

## Slide 5: While you sort, ask
- Which job needs the most school? Which needs none past high school?
- A health inspector and a line cook both care about the danger zone. How is their day different?
- Where does a school food service director fit?

## Slide 6: Would I like this?
- Pick two cards.
- The day I would rather have. The education I am willing to do. The pay I would need.
- One sentence: "I would or would not like ___ because ___."
- Keep it in your FACS folder. Unit 2 and Unit 7 use it.
Notes: 3 minutes. Not graded for the answer, only for being done.

- Twenty items. Twenty minutes. Fifty points.
- Part 1: Safe and Clean. Part 2: Tools, Measuring, Recipes. Part 3: Nutrients, MyPlate, Labels. Part 4: Plan, Shop, Cook.
- Calculators for items 8 and 17 only. Show your work on both.
- If you are not sure, write what you think and why.
