A. ______________________________ (how many servings in the whole package)
B. ______________________________ (the amount all the numbers describe)
C. ______________________________ (energy in one serving)
D. ______________________________ (how much of a full day one serving gives, based on 2,000 calories)
E. ______________________________ (a nutrient to get less of; salt)
F. ______________________________ (a nutrient to get more of; keeps you full)
G. ______________________________ (sugar the company put in)

**Word bank:** serving size, servings per container, calories, percent daily value, sodium, dietary fiber, added sugars. [Sal: add the Turkish, Portuguese, and Spanish words from `Vocabulary 01.md`.]

**From the label on the screen:** Serving size ____________ Calories ____________ Three nutrients and their amounts: ____________, ____________, ____________

**The 5 and 20 rule.** 5% DV or less is LOW. 20% DV or more is HIGH.
- Low is good for the get less list: saturated fat, sodium, added sugars.
- High is good for the get more list: dietary fiber, vitamin D, calcium, iron, potassium.

Practice on the screen label: Sodium is ______% DV, so it is low / in between / high. Fiber is ______% DV, so it is low / in between / high.

**The servings trap.** If the package has ______ servings and you eat the whole package, multiply every number by ______.

Screen label: calories in the whole package = ______ x ______ = ______. Sodium in the whole package = ______ x ______ = ______ mg.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | | | | | | |
| 2. | | | | | | |

## Page 3: The hunt, part 2: find it

**Directions:** Use your table. Every answer needs a package name AND a number. A number is evidence. "It looks unhealthy" is not.

1. Which package has the MOST sodium per serving? Package: __________________ Number: ______ mg (______% DV)

2. Which package has the FEWEST servings per container? Package: __________________ Number: ______

3. Find one package with 20% DV or more of anything. Package: __________________ Nutrient: __________________ ______% DV. Is that good or bad for this nutrient? Why? _______________________________

4. Find one package with 0 g added sugars. Package: __________________ (If none, write "none at this station" and name the lowest: __________________ ______ g.)

5. Which package has the MOST dietary fiber per serving? Package: __________________ Number: ______ g (______% DV)

6. Which package would you pick for an after-school snack? Package: __________________ Two numbers that back you up: ______________________ and ______________________

Grade 8 stretch: pick a package that gives fiber in grams only. Compute the % DV: grams ______ divided by 28, times 100 = ______%. Does your answer match the label? ______

## Teacher key

**Page 1.** A: servings per container. B: serving size. C: calories. D: percent daily value. E: sodium. F: dietary fiber. G: added sugars. The screen label answers depend on the poster label you use. [Sal: write them here: serving size ______, calories ______, sodium ______% (low / in between / high), fiber ______% (low / in between / high), package calories ______, package sodium ______ mg.]

**Pages 2 and 3.** Answers depend on the packages at each station. What to check: the serving size column is filled before the calories column (watch for it during the hunt); every hunt answer has a package name and a number; question 3 says whether high is good or bad for that nutrient (high fiber, calcium, iron: good; high sodium, added sugars, saturated fat: not good).

**If the written-out labels on page 4 are used, the answers are:**
1. Most sodium per serving: Chicken Noodle Soup, 890 mg (39%).
2. Fewest servings per container: a tie between the soup and the sports drink at about 2.5; accept either. (Push: "which one would you actually finish in one sitting?" The bottle. That is the serving size game.)
3. 20% or more: Frosted Corn Flakes iron 45% (good), or added sugars 26% (not good); Soup sodium 39% (not good); Sports Drink added sugars 42% (not good); Granola Bars added sugars 22% (not good). Any correct pair with the right good or bad call.
4. 0 g added sugars: Potato Chips or Chicken Noodle Soup.
5. Most fiber: Granola Bars, 2 g (7%). (All five are low in fiber; that is worth saying out loud.)
6. Any package with two numbers that support it. The strongest case is usually the potato chips (0 g added sugars, 170 mg sodium) or the granola bars, and the point is that "the healthy sounding one" (sports drink, granola bars) does not win on the numbers.
Grade 8 stretch: Granola Bars 2 divided by 28 = 0.071, about 7%; matches.

**Scoring:** complete, partial, or missing for daily work. Complete is: page 1 labeled, five rows on page 2, six answers on page 3 each with a name and a number.
