# Calendar 05: Make It, Mend It, Wear It

Unit 5, Apparel and Textile Production and Design. 28 periods of 40 minutes, days 116 to 143 of the year. Days 116 to 135 are in marking period 3; days 136 to 143 are in marking period 4. Five full teaching weeks plus a three-meeting week. One cell per period: the lesson code and title in bold on the first line, then what happens that day.

**SEW** marks every period students handle needles or pins, which means the count-out and count-in routine runs and a station count sheet gets initialed. **MACHINE** marks a period the sewing machines run, which adds the machine close-down routine (presser foot down, power off, chair in) at the end. The routines are the one thing in this unit that is never optional. **CHECK** marks a formal assessment or a rubric collected. **PROJECT** marks an Upcycle Challenge day.

This calendar is written in day numbers and teaching weeks, not dates. The columns are the five meetings of each teaching week; a holiday pushes every later day back one meeting. Map the day numbers onto your school's calendar; the day numbers and the order do not change.

Day 144 is Unit 6 Lesson 6.1, the farm-to-plate trace. Two things carry over and the Unit 6 writer already has them: the room's station routine, which transfers to the kitchen's six-step sanitation routine, and the "would I like this" self-check from day 142, which sits in the FACS folder next to the Lesson 1.22 and Lesson 6.18 ones and is what Unit 7 builds the resume from.

## Counts

- **Lessons:** 19 (5.1 to 5.19). Multi-day lessons: 5.4 (2), 5.10 (3), 5.11 (3), 5.14 (2), 5.17 (2), 5.18 (2), 5.19 (2). Twelve lessons run one day.
- **SEW days: 12** (days 121 to 125, 129 to 131, and 137 to 140). Every one of them runs the six-step count-out and count-in on the station count sheet in `Handout 05.05 - Tool Kit Guide and Count Sheet.md`, with a new Station Manager each day and the teacher's initials in the row. Day 140 is a SEW day for the ten-minute finishing window only, and the count runs for it. **MACHINE days: 6** (days 126 to 131); each one ends with the close-down routine on every machine, and days 126 to 128 carry no fabric and no thread on purpose. **No station is dismissed on a count that does not match. That rule has never once been worth breaking.**
- **CHECK days: 5** (days 120, 131, 135, 141, 143). Day 120: the Fibers and Care Quiz closes Topic 5.1 in the last 15 minutes of Lesson 5.4 Day 2. Day 131: the Constructed Item rubric, 20 points, finished live, and the Stitch Sampler Performance Check, 28 points, in the last 20 minutes; together they close Topic 5.2. Day 135: the Consumer Comparison Task closes Topic 5.3 in the last 20 minutes. Day 141: the project folder comes in and is scored on Rubric 05, which is Topic 5.4's check. Day 143: the unit test in the last 20 minutes, which also covers Topic 5.5.
- **PROJECT days: 6** (days 136 to 141). One of them ends in a required teacher signature: the plan sheet on day 137. **No initials, no cutting.**
- **Topic day counts:** 5.1 five (days 116 to 120), 5.2 eleven (days 121 to 131), 5.3 four (days 132 to 135), 5.4 six (days 136 to 141), 5.5 two (days 142 to 143). Total 28.
- **The D19 arithmetic, shown:** the 2026-09-14 revision added three machine days (126 to 128) and rebuilt the construction as a three-day machine build (129 to 131). That is 11 days for Topic 5.2 against the old 10. The day came from Topic 5.3: Lesson 5.12 compressed from two days to one, which the old calendar itself listed as the first cut to make, because machine seams let the build finish inside three days where the hand build took three days plus a two-day machine introduction. Old: 5 + 10 + 5 + 6 + 2 = 28. New: 5 + 11 + 4 + 6 + 2 = 28.
- **Marking periods:** days 116 to 135 are in MP3, days 136 to 143 in MP4. MP3 closes on day 135, before the project starts, so MP3's labs and projects weight rests on the day 131 Constructed Item rubric alone. Rubric 05 and the unit test both land in MP4.
- **Set-up days that are not class days:** the swatch sets, the practice cloths, the paper patterns, the drill sheets, the career cards, the journey cards, and the game cards all get cut or printed before the unit starts, not the night before. The stains for day 120 are made after the last period on day 119 so they are set. Every machine is tested with thread on scrap and every bobbin wound before day 126, and every machine is pre-threaded the morning of day 129. **No initials on the machine test list, no machine week.**

## If a day is lost

A snow day, an assembly, a field trip, or a state test pushes everything one cell to the right. Drop days in this order to get back on schedule:

1. **5.10 Day 3** (day 128, the paper drills). Fold the straight-line drill into the first ten minutes of Lesson 5.11 Day 1 at the pre-threaded machines with no thread, and drop the curve and the square. The control boxes are still checked; what is lost is the pivot practice, so the grade 8 pocket stretch comes off the table that week.
2. **5.13** (day 133) folded into 5.12: run cost per wear as the buyer choice's math step and drop the four-garment inspection ranking. The Consumer Comparison Task on day 135 still checks the skill. This costs the best math day in the topic, so it goes second, not first.
3. **5.4 Day 2** (day 120). Run the stain station as one teacher demonstration inside Day 1 and give the Fibers and Care Quiz in the last 15 minutes of Day 1 instead. What is lost is the stain chemistry, which is the best science connection in Topic 5.1.
4. **5.1** (day 116), folded into Lesson 5.2. Keep the PPE walk as a ten-minute segment and the dress code discussion as five minutes of the agreement day. This one costs the most of the four, because the PPE table is the cheapest safety teaching in the unit and it is what makes Lesson 5.5 land four days later.

**Never drop these:** **5.5** (day 121, tool safety and the count routine; nobody in this room touches a needle before it is taught, and a student who misses day 121 gets the rules and one practice count at my table before their first sewing day), **5.6 and 5.7** (days 122 and 123, the running stitch and the backstitch, which every later day is built on), **5.16** (day 137, the plan and the approval, because without an initialed plan nothing gets cut and the build fails), and **5.17** (days 138 and 139, the build itself).

**If a day is lost inside the project (days 136 to 141):** the approval checkpoint holds its place no matter what. The plan is initialed before any fabric is cut, even if that means the approval conversation and the first cut happen in the same period. If only one build day survives, run the reduced-scope version for the whole class from minute one, name it out loud as the plan and not as a fallback, and fold the display card into the last eight minutes of that same day; the gallery then compresses to one day and the reflection moves to the do now and first ten minutes of day 142.

**If a day is lost at the end:** the unit test moves to the do now and first twenty minutes of Unit 6 Lesson 6.1 on day 144, and the careers self-check is collected as the exit card on day 142. Do not shorten the test from 20 minutes, and do not cut the review game to make room; stop the game at minute 18 as written.

**If the loss is a whole week** (a closure, a testing week): run the 24-day version in the unit plan's Section 6, which drops flex items 1 through 4 above and leaves the project's six days untouched. The project is the thing a principal will ask about, and it is the only place in the unit where a student builds something from nothing. Protect its six days before anything else.
