## Part 1: Label parts (5 points)

**1.** Match each label term to what it tells you. Write the letter on the line.

| Term | | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ___ Serving size | | A. How much of a full day's amount one serving gives you, based on 2,000 calories |
| ___ Servings per container | | B. Sugar the company put in, not sugar that was already in the food |
| ___ Percent daily value | | C. The amount of food that all the numbers on the label describe |
| ___ Added sugars | | D. How many servings are in the whole package |
| ___ Dietary fiber | | E. A nutrient to get more of; it helps digestion and keeps you full |

## Part 2: The six nutrients (6 points)

**2.** Match each nutrient to its main job in the body. Write the letter on the line.

| Nutrient | | Main job |
|---|---|---|
| ___ Carbohydrates | | A. Build and repair muscle and other body tissue |
| ___ Proteins | | B. Carry nutrients around the body and control body temperature |
| ___ Fats | | C. The body's main quick energy source |
| ___ Vitamins | | D. Build bones and teeth and carry oxygen in the blood (calcium, iron) |
| ___ Minerals | | E. Stored energy; protect organs; carry vitamins A, D, E, and K |
| ___ Water | | F. Help the body run its processes; found most in fruits and vegetables |

## Part 3: Reading the labels (9 points)

**3.** What is the serving size on Label A? (1 point)

_____________________________________________

**4.** How many servings are in one box of Label B? (1 point)

_____________________________________________

**5.** Which label has more added sugars per serving? How many grams more? (2 points)

Label ______ has more. It has ______ grams more added sugars per serving.

**6.** Use the 5 and 20 rule. Is the added sugars in one serving of Label A low, high, or in between? Circle one and write the percent you used. (1 point)

Low / In between / High. The percent daily value is ______%.

**7.** Use the 5 and 20 rule. Is the dietary fiber in one serving of Label B low, high, or in between? Circle one and write the percent you used. (1 point)

Low / In between / High. The percent daily value is ______%.

**8.** You pour 2 cups of Label A into a bowl. How many calories and how much sodium is that? Show your math. (2 points)

Calories: ____________ Sodium: ____________ mg

**9.** If someone ate a whole box of Label B in a week, how many calories would that be in total? Show your math. (1 point)

_____________________________________________

## Part 4: Serving or portion (2 points)

**10.** A student named Devin pours Label B into a large bowl. It is about 3 cups. How many servings is that? How many grams of fiber is in the bowl? Show your math. (2 points)

Servings: ____________ Fiber: ____________ g

## Part 5: Credible sources (2 points)

**11.** You want to know if Label A is a healthy breakfast. Four sources say something about it. Which ONE is the most credible, and why? Use at least one of the four source-check questions (who wrote it, what do they sell, what is the evidence, when was it posted) in your answer. (2 points)

- Source W: A video with 4 million views by a fitness influencer who sells a protein powder. It says all cereal is "junk."
- Source X: The cereal company's website. It says Honey Crunch Oat Cereal is "part of a balanced breakfast."
- Source Y: An article on a hospital's website written by a registered dietitian last year. It says to pick a cereal with 4 grams or more of fiber and under 10 grams of added sugars per serving.
- Source Z: A comment under the video that says "my cousin eats it every day and he is fine."

Most credible: Source ______ because ________________________________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

## Part 6: The better choice (6 points)

**12.** Which cereal is the better choice for breakfast, Label A or Label B? Write three sentences.
- Sentence 1: your choice.
- Sentence 2: two numbers from the labels that support it (name the nutrient and the amount for each cereal).
- Sentence 3: the front of Label A says "Naturally sweetened with honey." Using the ingredient list or the added sugars line, say whether that claim is misleading and why.

# Teacher key

Total: 30 points. Standard lines checked are listed per item. All NYS lines are from the Nutrition and Wellness content module (N&W) unless marked CTE.

| Item | Answer | Points | Standard lines checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Serving size: C; Servings per container: D; Percent daily value: A; Added sugars: B; Dietary fiber: E | 5 (1 each) | N&W 2. c); National FCS 14.2.4 (Lesson 1.11, Objective 1) |
| 2 | Carbohydrates: C; Proteins: A; Fats: E; Vitamins: F; Minerals: D; Water: B | 6 (1 each) | N&W 2. a); CTE HSW 1. b); National FCS 14.2.1 (Lesson 1.9, Objective 1) |
| 3 | 1 cup (40 g). Accept "1 cup." | 1 | N&W 2. c); National FCS 14.2.4 |
| 4 | About 12 | 1 | N&W 2. c); National FCS 14.2.4 |
| 5 | Label A has more; 12 minus 2 = 10 grams more | 2 (1 for the label, 1 for the number) | N&W 2. a) and c); CTE FCL 4. f); CDOS 3a Basic Skills |
| 6 | High; 24% (20% or more is high) | 1 (both parts needed) | N&W 2. c); National FCS 14.2.4 (the 5 and 20 rule) |
| 7 | In between; 14% (more than 5%, less than 20%) | 1 (both parts needed) | N&W 2. c); National FCS 14.2.4 |
| 8 | 2 cups is 2 servings. Calories: 2 x 160 = 320. Sodium: 2 x 210 = 420 mg | 2 (1 each; math shown) | N&W 2. c); CTE FCL 4. f); CDOS 3a Basic Skills (Lesson 1.11, Objective 2) |
| 9 | 12 x 140 = 1,680 calories. Accept 1,680 or "about 1,680." | 1 | N&W 2. c); CDOS 3a Basic Skills |
| 10 | 3 cups divided by 1 1/2 cups = 2 servings. Fiber: 2 x 4 = 8 g | 2 (1 each; math shown) | N&W 2. a); National FCS 14.3.1 (Lesson 1.10, serving versus portion) |
| 11 | Source Y. Full credit for any reason tied to a source-check question: written by a registered dietitian (who wrote it), on a hospital site that is not selling cereal or powder (what do they sell), gives a checkable number for fiber and sugar (evidence), posted last year (when). Half credit for Source Y with a reason like "it sounds professional." No credit for W, X, or Z. | 2 | N&W 2. c); CTE PSI 4. Research Applications in CTE b) b.; National FCS 14.2.4 (Lesson 1.12, Objective 2) |
| 12 | Better choice: Label B (accept Label A only if the student argues it with two correct numbers, for example iron and calcium are equal so the tiebreak is taste; this is rare and should be a 4 at most). Sentence 2, any two correct pairs: added sugars 12 g versus 2 g; fiber 2 g versus 4 g; sodium 210 mg versus 190 mg; protein 3 g versus 5 g; calories 160 versus 140. Sentence 3: the claim is misleading because honey is the fourth sweetener on the list, after sugar and corn syrup, and the label shows 12 g of added sugars (24% DV), so most of the sweetness is not honey. | 6: choice 1; two correct numbers 2 (1 each); the claim judged misleading 1; evidence from the ingredient list or added sugars line 2 | N&W 2. c); CTE FCL 4. e) and f); National FCS 14.2.4 and 3.5.6 (Lesson 1.11, Objectives 2 and 3) |

**Scoring notes**
- 24 to 30: got it. 18 to 23: review the items missed and offer the retake. Under 18: retake after a one-on-one review with the Spot the Trick handout.
- Item 12 is the one to read carefully. A student who picks B with no numbers has the opinion, not the skill; that is a 1 of 6.
- Items 8, 9, and 10 are the percent daily value and multiplication skills that the $40 project math check (Lesson 1.19) builds on. Note who missed them.

**ELL and IEP versions**
- ELL: the two labels stay the same; items 1 and 2 include the word bank from `Vocabulary 01.md` in Turkish, Portuguese, and Spanish; items 11 and 12 may be answered in short phrases with the sentence frames "Source ___ is credible because ___" and "Label ___ is better because ___ has ___ and ___ has ___."
- IEP and 504: extended time; the quiz may be read aloud; items 11 and 12 may be answered orally and recorded by the teacher; a calculator is already allowed for everyone.
- Grade 6 support: give items 1 through 10 and item 12 without sentence 3 (24 points; scale to 30).
- Grade 8 stretch: add one item: "Label B's fiber is 4 g. The daily value for fiber is 28 g. Compute the percent daily value and check it against the label." (4 divided by 28 = 0.143, about 14%; the label says 14%.) Bonus 2 points.

**Sources**
- Label numbers are typical of store brand oat cereals and were written for this quiz; they are not from a specific product. The daily values used for the percents are the FDA's 2020 label values (added sugars 50 g, fiber 28 g, sodium 2,300 mg, iron 18 mg, calcium 1,300 mg, vitamin D 20 mcg, potassium 4,700 mg).
- Standards: NYS N&W module lines 2. a) and 2. c); CTE HSW 1. b); CTE FCL 4. e) and f); CTE PSI 4. b) b.; CDOS 3a Basic Skills; National FCS 3.0 competencies 14.2.1, 14.2.4, 14.3.1, 3.5.6. All quoted in the Lesson 1.9 to 1.13 files.
